Anatomy of a title sequence…
The title sequence is an integral part of a films construction. Often used to include background plot information and mood setting. The ‘titles’ are also often refered to as the film intro, and in many cases are used as an extra scene to inform the viewer of plot direction and position within the film’s scenario.
Very important to the construction of a title sequence is that the designers view and research the elements of the film itself. Some key elements are as follows:
- Mood, Audio Visual Landscape.
- Characters/Actors, Introduction through scene excerpts or characterization.
- Typography, used to convey the information and immerse the viewer within the visual landscape.
Title elements….introduce as directed, as an intro title this may be plotted as ‘on-screen’ time.
Lead actors will usually have more on screen time than others, and will need to be introduced in the titles accordingly.
- Film Title, optionally Director.
- Lead Actor names. When in doubt on order of appearance, use alphabetical.
- Lead production staff. Director/Producer, Editor. Post companies.
With this project, it important to sample the media from each film pronto so that editing and design can begin straight away!
